White House slaps sanctions on Russia over Navalny poisoning : worldnewsMarch 2, 2021
It’s because a lot of people don’t understand how the world works.
In reality, the world isn’t governed by morality. That’s a made up concept used to control the masses. Nations ally with nations that help them to survive.
The Nazis, for instance, had two main ideological concepts to their regime(at least these are the concepts sold to the laymen to control them).
1.) White Supremecy. Yet the Nazis allied with Arabs, and Japanese because they would help them win the war. Whether these alliances morally aligned with their goals was almost a non-factor.
2.) Fighting Communism. The Nazi party was essentially founded as an anti-Communist party, with the goal of defeating Communism in Germany(which was spreading from the USSR). And who did they ally with? The Communist USSR. Once again, pragmatism trumped their personal morality.
The USA aligns with Osama Bin Laden’s Mujahedeen one day. And the next day it’s against them. The USA allies with Saddam Hussein one day. And the next is against him. The CIA/DEA alligns with one drug cartel/syndicate one day… and the next it’s against them. The alliances have nothing to do with shared morality… they have to do with common goals, which often change(and thus the alliance is broken). In other words… the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Biden aligns himself with China/Saudis, who murder people, then aligns himself against Russia, who murder people. To world leaders, none of this has to do with “morality”. It has to do with survival, and corruption. It’s just the idiotic laymen who think that morality factors into this equation, or that your “allies” should be the good guys, and your enemies the bad guys.
If you are that stringent with picking your friends and foes, your country will not exist for very long(unless it happens to be existing at the whim of more powerful nations, like the USA).
It’s hard for people on reddit to realize that all of this talk about morality, and “doing right”, and being upset about “immoral acts”, and expecting foreign policy to be morality based have nothing to do with the reality of the situation. Nations are in the business of survival. It’s very rare that your allies just so happen to morally align with you perfectly. What determines alliances is two things…
1.) Can they help your nation.
2.) Can they help you personally(Corruption, Bribes, etc).
What a country does morally isn’t important beyond the implications it has on public sentiment regarding domestic leadership(I.E. hurting your chances of getting reelected).
