The UAE continues to be second only to Israel in global vaccine administration rates.

The UAE has vaccinated 93,101 residents against Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

The country’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) said the total doses administered now stands at 5.46 million. This takes the rate of doses per 100 people to 55.27.

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE have started an international study with 4,000 volunteers to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of their Covid-19 vaccine in healthy pregnant women, the companies said on Thursday.

Women will receive the vaccine during weeks 24-34 of gestation, getting two shots 21 days apart — the same regimen used in the larger clinical trial.

Meanwhile, an Israeli study that found the first dose of Pfizer’s vaccine to be 85% effective is fuelling a debate over the recommended two-dose schedule, as governments try to stretch out supplies.

The Sheba Medical Center’s findings compare with overall efficacy of around 95% in a two-dose regimen 21 days apart.

Over in the UAE Capital, at least 600 jabs are being administered daily at a drive-thru facility in Abu Dhabi, boosting the UAE’s nationwide vaccination drive.

According to health authorities, the first dose of vaccination is temporarily offered only to the elderly, those suffering from chronic diseases, and people of determination. However, anyone can take the second jab by showing proof of taking the first one.
