India vs England, 1st Test: Joe Root Becomes 3rd Englishman To Hit A Century In His 100th Test

England skipper Joe Root has joined an exclusive list following his century on Day 1 of the first Test against India. He became the third Englishman to hit a century in his 100th Test. Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart are the only other players from England to have registered this milestone. The century by Root is his third straight hundred, having scored tons previously in the recently concluded two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

There are eight other players apart from Root who have scored a century in their 100th Test. 

Cowdrey was the first cricketer to record this milestone, scoring 104 runs in a game back in 1968. Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad is the second name on the list, having accumulated 145 runs in 1989. 

West Indies cricketer Gordon Greenidge (1990) and English batsman Alec Stewart (2000) are the next names, having scored 149 and 105 runs. 

Inzamam-ul Haq occupies the next spot on the list, having scored 184 in 2005. The Pakistan cricketer is followed by Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith.

Ponting scored 120 and 143 not out in the two innings of his 100th Test, with Smith accumulating 131 runs. 

Hashim Amla is the other name on the list barring Root who is the newest addition, having scored 134 in 2017.
