Qatar: Hundreds sent to prosecution for infringing coronavirus rules

Qatar has referred violators of social distancing to prosecution for the first time as the country is seeking to limit spread of COVID-19.

The Qatari Interior Ministry has said hundreds of people have been sent to prosecution for infringing coronavirus rules including 16 who did not observe social distancing, Al Sharq newspaper reported.

Health authorities have set safe distancing at least 1.5 metres as part of precautions against pandemic.

The violators also include 580 persons who have failed to wear the mandatory face masks, eight for violating quarantine rules and six others for not uploading the health smart app Ehteraz.

Last May, the Qatari government said it is necessary for all citizens and foreign residents to upload the app when they leave home.

Qatar so far has recorded a tally of 156,351 coronavirus cases and 254 related fatalities amid renewed restrictions against the virus.
