Conspiracies hatched to defame Indian tea, yoga too: PM Narendra Modi

GUWAHATI | NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at “conspiracies” being hatched overseas to target India’s soft power such as tea and yoga, as he addressed rallies in election-bound Assam and West Bengal on Sunday and launched projects worth more than Rs 14,000 crore. Speaking in Haldia in West Bengal, he also lashed out at the Mamata Banerjee government for its silence on the issue.

The comments come close on the heels of global icons such as singer Rihanna and climate change activist Greta Thunberg taking to social media to support the ongoing farmers’ protest at Delhi’s border points against three central farm laws. The growing social media campaign in support of the protest has also targeted tea and yoga.

“These days there are conspiracies against the nation,” Modi said, addressing a huge gathering in Dhekiajuli in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district. “They are trying to malign the image of Indian tea worldwide.”

He further said, “Some documents have revealed that such conspiracy is being hatched by forces sitting in a foreign land. Can you accept those people who accepted these attacks and praised those attackers? Political parties are silent on this attack on Assam’s tea, which is India’s identity. However, every tea worker will ask answers and give them a befitting answer. Let them do their conspiracy, but the people of India would not make them succeed.”

Addressing a rally in Haldia, he slammed chief minister Mamata Banerjee for not speaking out against the alleged conspiracy. “People who talk about ‘Ma, Mati and Manush’ (mother, motherland, people) don’t have the courage to raise their voice for ‘Bharat Mata’. That’s because these people have criminalised politics, institutionalised corruption and politicised the police,” he said.
